How to Have a Helmut Newton Day
What is art? Technically this, but that doesn't mean the bar is worryingly low. Some say it's just about anything that could be deemed creative or requires creativity for it to exist. What is good art? Well that’s really up to you.
Berlin legend, the late photographer Helmut Newton was famed for approaching all of his work with the same level of artistry. When it came to style or composition he didn’t differentiate between editorials for magazines or work for brands. His erotically charged style had him dubbed ‘the king of kink’ whose work transcended and transformed commercial photography.
You can see a great selection of his brand, nude work, polaroids and a collection of his personal items as well as a full recreation of his office at the Museum für Fotografie in Berlin. It’s only 10 Euros per person and there are 3 floors of work to see.
I entered the exhibit with an open mind, not knowing anything about it except for the familiar brands he created eye-catching work for; brands like Smirnoff, Mini and Swarovski. There’s also a stunning collection of his nude work and his private polaroids that give a glimpse into his shoots and creative process.
Once you’ve had your fill and topped up your soul with the art of photography, you can take a train to Gendarmenmarkt and drink like Helmut Himself.
Charlottenstraße 57, 10117 Berlin is where you will find Newton Bar. A classic bar straight out of a scene from a 50s movie where ‘fellas’ and ‘dames’ smoke after a day's work at the ad agency. Red leather seats and wood-panelled walls are rounded off with black and white full length nude work from the man himself.
As well as an extensive cocktail and wine list, you can enjoy a Newton Negroni.
